Most hikes I made around and in Rovaniemi in the period from March to April 2014 have been brought together here on one map. The reindeer head looming vaguely around the city centre came into being by using an old map of the architect Alvar Aalto. He redesigned the city after the destruction at the end of the Second World War, using the head of a reindeer as a guiding principle. The most beautiful hikes were the ones to the South, over the Kemijoki river which was still mostly frozen. The rivers and water on this abstracted map have been coloured grey. As I had one operating base in the city, my fellow artist Maria Huhmarniemi’s apartment, I explored in all directions as much as possible, the same way I walk to the city of ’s-Hertogenbosch from various directions. You will find my journal on my experiences in Rovaniemi on www.ankinlapland.123website.nl, where you will also find all hikes made, documented as separate maps under: de gelopen routes.
