Nature in the Netherlands is wedged between a network of roads, motorways, arrival routes and crossing routes. Silence only exists surrounded by motorized movement and industry. Even in the most remote rural areas, the lapwing’s call has to compete with the sounds of cars, tractors or machines. In the past century, silence and the sounds that go with it have been pushed back more and more by ubiquitous man-produced, motorized sound. The specific sound of silence is becoming a memory of an older generation. Will it die out, just like devotion? In the 7 silence chapels various gestures have been placed, all calling for contemplation to a certain extent.
